About this estimate template

An estimate gives the customer an approximate price before the work starts. This one has the same layout as the quote, with the total labelled “Estimated total” and a valid-until date.

List labor and materials as separate lines so the customer can see where the price comes from. Use the terms box to say what could change the price, such as hidden damage or changes to the scope.

If you are giving a fixed price, use the quote template instead.

Questions

Is an estimate binding?

It depends on your state and what you agree with the customer. This template does not give legal advice, so say clearly in the terms box what you mean by the price.

Can I turn an estimate into an invoice?

Yes. Open the invoice template and copy the lines across.

How are the totals worked out?

Each line is quantity times rate, rounded to the cent. The subtotal is the sum of the lines. A percent discount comes off the subtotal, tax is added at the rate you type, and any deposit or amount paid comes off to give the balance due. Leave the quantity blank for a flat price.

Does it work out sales tax for me?

No. Sales tax rules and rates differ by state and by item, so you type your own rate or leave it blank. Nothing is looked up. This is not tax or accounting advice.
