About this fire extinguisher inspection checklist

Print one sheet per extinguisher, or per visit. The monthly section follows the common NFPA 10 visual inspection points; the annual section prompts the maintenance checks, hydrostatic test dates and tag update. For other systems, use the fire alarm and fire sprinkler checklists.

Questions

How often do fire extinguishers need to be inspected?

NFPA 10 calls for a visual inspection at least every 30 days and maintenance at least once a year, plus internal maintenance and hydrostatic tests at longer intervals depending on the extinguisher type. Your local fire code official (AHJ) may set extra rules.

What is checked in a monthly inspection?

Location, visibility and access, legible instructions, safety pin and tamper seal, fullness, gauge in the green, no damage, corrosion or leaks, hose and nozzle condition, and the tag dated and initialed.

Is this checklist an official inspection record?

It is a general template to help you record your checks. Annual maintenance should be done by a certified person, and you should follow NFPA 10, the manufacturer and your AHJ.
